Valeva la pena? Mi sto ripetendo, sicuro, però scopro anche che in questi giorni, è ospitato Camposaz, un workshop internazionale di architettura partecipata. Giovani architetti da tutta Italia – ma anche dalla Svezia, dalla Croazia, dal Portogallo – stanno lavorando nella frazione di Geroli, semiabbandonata ma ancora con una sua comunità e una sua identità: hanno progettato installazioni negli spazi pubblici, li hanno realizzati a tempo di record, mentre tiravano su il nuovo spazio giochi o una terrazza coperta in legno hanno trovato il tempo anche per raccogliere le storie, i consigli, le merende e le grappe degli abitanti. Una bella storia di giovani professionisti, di incontro tra giovani e meno giovani, di rigenerazione di un paese di montagna, di rispetto per il paesaggio che fa ben sperare anche per la battaglia più dura che la valle si sta trovando a combattere, contro un nuovo tracciato autostradale.

Cosa motiva un team di architetti ventenni a raggiungere la valle di Terragnolo dal nord Europa e da diverse regioni d’Italia, per compiere una esperienza di progettazione sperimentale impossibile in città? L’idea di svolgere nella frazione di Geroli (Valle di Terragnolo) la sedicesima edizione di Camposaz prende forma su proposta del Masetto, nel corso del 2018, attraverso incontri e sopralluoghi ai quali partecipano l’amministrazione comunale e gli architetti di Camposaz. La valle di Terragnolo costituisce uno dei pochi casi di territorio montano non ancora intaccato dal turismo di massa in Trentino. Obiettivo del workshop è quello di inserirsi in un processo di transizione verso un modello di turismo sostenibile e alternativo, capace di dare un nuovo significato ad un territorio ancora “autentico”, con l’obiettivo di reagire all’evidente processo di spopolamento e abbandono che lo caratterizza.

Dopo una fase di confronto diretto con l’amministrazione comunale e con gli abitanti della frazione di Geroli, dove si è deciso di intervenire, i partecipanti concepiscono e realizzano un progetto articolato su ambiti distinti. Gli abitanti partecipano in prima persona con il loro sguardo sullo spazio pubblico. Il centro dell’abitato assume un aspetto nuovo, il legno porta una terrazza pubblica troppo assolata e ridà vita al parco giochi, richiamando nella struttura i profili montani che le fanno da sfondo. 

All’ingresso del paese è collocata l’installazione “Le dodici porte”, un oggetto architettonico e artistico relativamente leggero che funziona sia come punto di riferimento sia come “macchina visiva” per la valle. Le dodici porte rappresentano il passare del tempo, ciascuna delle quali simboleggia sia un’ora del giorno che un mese dell’anno. Allo stesso tempo, la struttura assomiglia a un obiettivo fotografico puntato verso un’area in pericolo di essere distrutta dalle nuove infrastrutture in progetto.

Was it worth it? I’m repeating myself, sure, but I have also found out that these days Camposaz, an international workshop of participatory architecture, is taking place. Young architects from all over Italy – but also from Sweden, Croatia, Portugal – are working in Geroli, a semi-abandoned hamlet that still has its own vital community and identity. The people from Camposaz have designed installations in public spaces and created them in record time. While they were setting up the new playground or a covered wooden terrace, they also found time to collect and share the stories, advice, snacks and “grappa” from the inhabitants. A beautiful story of young professionals, of the meeting between young and older generations, of regeneration of a mountain village, of respect for the landscape that bodes well for the toughest battle that the valley is having to fight, against a new motorway route.

What motivates a team of twenty-year-old architects to reach the Terragnolo valley from Northern Europe and from different regions of Italy, to carry out an experimental design experience that is impossible in the city? The idea of ​​carrying out the sixteenth edition of Camposaz in the district of Geroli (Valle di Terragnolo) is based on a proposal made in 2018 by Masetto, through meetings and site visits joined by the municipal administration and the architects of Camposaz. The Terragnolo valley is one of the few mountain territories not yet affected by mass tourism in Trentino. The aim of the workshop is to become part of a transition process towards a sustainable and alternative tourism model, to give a new meaning to a still “authentic” area, and to counteract the evident process of depopulation and abandonment that characterizes it.

In the first phase of direct confrontation with both the municipal administration and the inhabitants of the hamlet of Geroli the decision on where and how to intervene has been taken. Then, the participants conceived and implemented a project articulated on distinct areas. The inhabitants participate directly with their gaze on the public space. A new image and aspect has been given to the centre of the inhabited area, the wood brings shade to a public terrace enhancing its use by protecting the space from direct sun and heat and gives life to the playground that recalls the mountains’ profile in the background with its structure.

The installation “The twelve doors” is located at the entrance of the village, it’s a light architectural and artistic object which acts both as a landmark and as a “visual machine” for the valley. The twelve doors represent the passing of time, with each door being both an hour of the day and a month of the year. At the same time, the structure resembles a photographic lens pointed towards an area in danger of being destroyed by a proposed new motorway.
