La 15esima edizione del workshop si inserisce nel progetto del parco delle Braile in continuità con l’idea da parte dell’amministrazione comunale di sviluppare in quest’area verde un percorso di gestione partecipata e sperimentale, coinvolgendo dai semplici cittadini alle scuole, dalle associazioni alle famiglie per favorire lo sviluppo del senso di comunità.

Il workshop si è concentrato nella parte ovest del parco, dove sono state realizzate due installazioni con l’obiettivo di dotare questo spazio pubblico di elementi identificativi usufruibili dai cittadini. Spunti e altri stimoli inoltre sono stati condivisi e discussi con gli ortolani che vivono quotidianamente il parco e altre associazioni che ivi svolgono attività ricreative e sociali di diversa natura (Andromeda, Sottotetto).

La prima installazione si estende all’interno dell’area dedicata agli orti sociali. Lo spazio, in origine privo di caratteristiche che lo rendessero attrattivo e fruibile, specialmente in estate, viene ripensato per offrire ai passanti momenti di sosta e un punto d’incontro. Innestandosi sugli elementi esistenti in calcestruzzo (in particolare le vasche quadrate che si trovano al centro dell’area) gli interventi si concentrano sul tema della socialità. Arredi ed installazioni site specific vengono realizzati per essere utilizzati come sedute, piattaforme, tavoli e per fornire spazi ombreggiati, prima assenti, contribuendo in tal modo a rendere abitabile uno spazio che prima era solo di passaggio.

La seconda installazione si colloca nell’area a nord-ovest del parco, nei pressi del muro di contenimento e del principale percorso pedonale che perimetrano lo spazio pubblico. Un basso volume allungato in calcestruzzo funge da spunto e supporto per realizzare un secondo elemento caratterizzante l’area verde. L’intervento si propone di creare una cortina verticale discontinua, schermando l’edificato retrostante e indirizzando lo sguardo dei fruitori verso il Castello di Arco, per offrire al tempo stesso la possibilità di utilizzare l’installazione come seduta o come area di gioco per i bambini. Alla forte caratterizzazione, data dall’iterazione dello schema costruttivo impiegato, si contrappone la scelta di non destinare la struttura a una specifica funzione vincolante, ma di lasciare alla libera interpretazione dei fruitori, dei più piccoli soprattutto, quale uso farne.

Il parco delle Braile si presenta come uno spazio dalle forti potenzialità urbane e di socialità, il cui sviluppo è tuttavia ostacolato dalla scarsa definizione funzionale dell’area. Per questo Camposaz propone la realizzazione di elementi simbolici che segnino l’inizio dell’area verde, dei landmark che possano diventare icone del nuovo parco. Tali elementi serviranno a segnare gli accessi, ma saranno anche elementi di arredo urbano con diverse funzioni. In un caso, ad esempio, questi elementi serviranno a nascondere alla vista alcuni elementi tecnici valorizzando i recenti interventi di miglioramento del parco.

The workshop is included as part of the participatory design and management process of the park, led by the municipality’s idea of developing the park in an experimental way. Many different stakeholders have been involved during the process, from simple citizens to scholars, from local associations to families. This method aims to enhance the sense of community and belonging for the inhabitants and users of the park.

The workshop was mainly developed in the western part of the park, where Camposaz realized two installations. The scope was not only to better highlight the space but also to increase the uses of the park by citizens. The design ideas were shared and discussed with the ORTOLANI (community gardeners), that use the park daily, and with other associations that use the park for events and social activities (such as “Andromeda” and “Sottotetto”)

The first installation was built inside the area dedicated to social gatherings of the community vegetable gardens. Before the workshop, this space had no peculiar features and it wasn’t easily enjoyable, especially in summer. Camposaz’s action aims to give the users a place to rest, stop and chat or simply meet. The installation is linked to the existing concrete structure, creating different shaded spaces as meeting points and social spaces. We built different elements, pergolas and urban furniture that can act as seats, platforms and shading elements and contribute to giving a strong character to the area.

The second installation was created in the north-west corner of the park. This space is crossed by a short curved concrete bench-wall and it’s near the main pedestrian path that marks the boundaries of the public area. The concrete wall was the starting point of the design process. A simple concrete element with no specific use has been transformed into a podium for a wooden landmark. This landmark acts as a “séparé” for the buildings on the back, characterizing the scenography of the park, and also to drive the sight of the users to the beautiful Arco’s Castle, which is on the top of a mountain nearby. Moreover, the installation can be used as a seat or as a playful space for children. Thanks to the building system and the random wooden scheme, the construction is a strong attraction point and, on the other hand, let the users use it freely and creatively.

The Nelson Mandela’s park(or Parco delle Braile) has a great potential for both urban and social opportunities, yet its use and development are quite poor because the area lacks spatial definition and a specific place in the collective imagination. That’s why Camposaz suggested the realization of landmark elements to highlight the spaces and that could transform themselves into the real symbols of the park. These elements will not only mark the entrances of the park, but they will also be functional urban furniture. Some of these elements could work as dividers to hide some technical elements or valorize recent interventions made in the park.
